این سنگ نوعی کریستال کوارتز به رنگ بنقش است . آمیتیست ، گران بهاترین سنگ در گروه کوارتزها  .این سنگ را در کتب جواهرشناسی فارسی ( جمشت ) گفته اند لکن نام آن در لاتین ( آمیتیست ) است . نام آمیتیست از زبان یونانی مشتق شده و به معنایHealing properties of purple amethyst stone
